rehabilitation fashion

This is a typical example of a residential block from our socialist heritage. In the last years becomes very fashionable to make additional heat insulation and balcony glazing. This blocks are very big, the apartments are private ownership, and it is impossible to organize all owners for a whole rehabilitation. And the result of this individual activity in the frame of one "community" is very funny.

Actually now are some EU-financed rehabilitation programmes for this prefabricated residential complexes and hopefully this funny slice-outlook will be changed soon.

architecture trance

No, it's not a result of an earthquake - it's a creativity-guake. This building is a lighting fittings store on the Ring road.

the corner

Residential assosiation building from the 1925. Very interesting is the ambition to achieve representative character with sculpture details, something very strange for such kind of buildings. This is a detail from the corner tower - "Serdika" street

water

The mineral spring, which is included on the city's emblem is one of the symbols of Sofia. The mineral waters are very hot - about 46 degrees Celsius and their healing properties have been known to help people with various illnesses. Near the mineral bath building there is a place where people can fill their empty bottles and other containers and take mineral water home for free.

martenizi 4

This is the end of the "marteniza" story for this year. The tradition says that you have to wear it from 1st of March until you see the first stork or tree in bloom. I'm not sure how many storks are in Sofia now, but trees with tied martenizi in to their branches are everywhere around!

the decrepit monument

Build in 1981 to celebrate the 1300 anniversary of the creation of the First Bulgarian State, this monument is located in the garden in front of the National Palace of Culture. Now nobody wants to pay for fixing it, there is a fence around it, with a signs "caution falling objects".

the monument

The monument of STEFAN STAMBOLOV (1854-1895), Bulgarian statesman in the "Crystal" garden.
His policy was characterized by the goal to preserve Bulgarian independence. During his leadership Bulgaria was transformed from an Ottoman province into a modern European state.
Unfortunately was barbarously attacked and mortally wounded by his political enemies, in a street near this garden.

cinema

Now there are several big multi-screen cinemas in Sofia. This is the place in front of Arena Mladost - in the south part of the city. I sow the Academy awarded Brother Coen's film "no country for old men" - it was actually rather disgusting experience.

50cm higher

The 3th of March is Bulgaria's Day of Liberation.
1878 - Bulgaria regains its independence from Ottoman Empire according to the Treaty of San Stefano, that marks the revival of the Bulgarian State, submerged under Ottoman rule since the end of 14th century. Ceremonies, celebrating the national holiday, are traditionally held throughout the country, particularly solemn in towns and cities boasting victorious battles for Russian and Bulgarian soldiers in the 1877-1878 liberation war.
This people are trying to be higher for having better view to the ceremony yesterday evening on the place between the Parlament and the Tsar Osvoboditel Monument.

graffiti

I'm really not sure if it is vandalism or art, but sometimes it brings spirit in the boring cityscape. This one faces the courtyard of the Spanish secondary school.
Please visit the other graffiti galleries - there are more than 140 today:
